Common Interview Questions

Q: Tell me something about yourself. (Actually saying "I’ll like to listen more about you")
A: This is a question to let the interviewer and interviewee warm up. Describe your qualifications, career history and skills. Emphasise those skills that are relevant to the offered job.

Q: Tell me about some of your achievements? (Actually asking "Are you an achiever?")
A: Select an achievement that happened not long ago. State the skills you used and explain the benefit of your action.

Q: Are you happy with your career? (Actually checking whether you are a positive person)
A: The answer has to be 'yes' but say something like you have hit a career peak and need to move on to find new challenges.

Q: Tell me a difficult situation you faced and how you tackled it. (Actually checking whether you can solve a problem logically)
A: Choose a difficult situation not caused by you. Explain your solution to overcome the problem.

Q: What is the most difficult type of decision to make? (Actually saying "I need someone strong and can make decision but who has a human side")
A: Highlight that you are a sensible person but show your decisiveness by saying you are ready to make a decision without sufficient information. This is something positive. For example, "I like to make decisions with ample information. However, when I need to make quick decisions, I have to rely on "gut feeling" and experience.

Q: What are your strengths? (Actually asking “What you are good at and how can it benefit this company you are applying to join)
A: Share your strengths. Explain how they can benefit employers. Strengths include technical knowledge; quick learning ability; determination to succeed; positive attitude and ability to work independently.

Q: What are your greatest weaknesses? (Actually checking whether you are aware of yourself)
A: Do not say you don't have any. Use a professional weakness such as a lack of experience in one area that is not vital for the job, or use a personal weakness and explain how you have tried to overcome it.

Q: What do you dislike about your present job? (Actually checking whether the offered job has responsibilities you dislike)
A: Choose a characteristic of your present company such as its size, slow decision making process and so on. Give an idea that you handle problems positively.

Q: Why do you want to leave your current employer? (Actually checking your reasons for moving and whether the new place will present the same types of problem)
A: Do not criticise your present company as there is a risk that the new potential employer might feel the same criticism would surface in his company. Say instead you are looking for more challenges, responsibilities and a change of environment.

Interview Advice
First Step – Research

Researching the company shows initiative, enthusiasm and a keen interest in the role.

Try to find out:

• What are the company's products and services?
• How is the company seen in the market?
• See the company like a customer and identify potential improvements
• The company’s competitors and industry as a whole

Second Step - Prepare

You should prepare well so as to talk comfortably during the interview.

Be familiar with your CV and answer questions based on it. Ensure you have read the job description from the job advertisement and think how your experience will benefit your potential employer.
• Prepare questions to ask the employer.
• Find out where the interview will be and arrive punctually.

Third Step – Attend Interview

Make sure your mobile phone is switched off.

• Greet your interviewer with a firm handshake and a smile.
• Wait to sit until the interviewer does.
• Sit up straight with both feet on the floor.
• Speak clearly and confidently.
• Try and maintain comfortable eye contact.
• Think before you speak.
• Avoid one word answers.
• Show enthusiasm.

Ask a question if invited by the interviewer (What will be my main responsibilities? Where is the location of the position? How soon will you decide before letting me know the outcome of the interview? What is the next step)
• Finish the interview with a handshake and a genuine thank you.

Fourth Step – After Interview

Write down a short summary of the interview.

This will help you to prepare for a possible second interview.
